Born in the autumn of 1986 on a salt farm in the Free State to an artistic family, Christof van der Berg was immersed from an early age in a world of creativity and unique perspectives. As a child, he stepped in as the local church organist, and by his early teens, he gained international recognition when he won a prestigious piano competition in Hollywood. That same year, he was honored with the Premier’s Award by the Free State premier. Despite these early accolades, his musical journey took an unexpected turn.

After spending two years in London, Christof established himself as a visual artist in Cape Town. However, his passion for music eventually drew him back to his first love. This rekindled passion led him on a global adventure, performing on luxury European cruise ships, in vibrant Irish nightclubs and theaters, and as far afield as the Middle and Far East. Over the next five years, he captivated diverse audiences with his artistry.

In 2017, Christof joined the acclaimed music group Il Quattro for a six-month tour in Mallorca, Spain. That same year marked a pivotal moment in his career as he founded Shades of Africa, a groundbreaking musical ensemble that seamlessly blended South African languages and sounds. The group’s success extended beyond borders, touring as far as Tanzania and Zanzibar and collaborating with local symphony orchestras to critical acclaim.

Today, Christof balances short international tours with performances across South Africa. Recently, he returned to the salt farm where he was born to create his first Afrikaans album. The decision to record in such a meaningful location reflects his deep connection to his roots and heritage. Two singles from this album have already been released, showcasing his modern interpretation of traditional Afrikaans music.
